Hi, I'm Femke, a Dutch contemporary artist driven by colour, texture and curiosity.
My artistic journey started much earlier than I realised. Growing up, my father worked as a creative teacher for children with visual impairments, and I often accompanied him during his classes. Watching these children create without fear of making mistakes completely changed the way I looked at creativity. They didn't focus on limitations. They simply enjoyed the process of making, exploring and expressing themselves. Their confidence, joy and imagination continue to inspire me today.
Although life temporarily took me in a different direction, returning to painting felt like coming home. Since then, I have been developing my own artistic language, combining vibrant colours with tactile relief lines, texture and metallic elements. My work explores the connection between emotion, memory and sensory experience, inviting viewers not only to look, but also to experience painting in a different way.
This growing fascination with tactile art has also inspired my ambition to explore how art can become more accessible for people with visual impairments. It is an ongoing part of my artistic research and one that I hope to develop further through future educational projects and workshops.
I am an autodidact and believe that curiosity is one of the greatest teachers. Every new painting is an opportunity to experiment, discover and grow. Some ideas work exactly as I imagined, others take me somewhere completely unexpected. Both are equally valuable, because every painting teaches me something new.
In 2026, my painting Happy Place was selected as a finalist for the international tARTget Painting Prize and will be exhibited at the Ateneo de Madrid in Madrid, Spain.
